The Gazette announces a contest to choose the most popular young lady in Douglas County. Readers vote by clipping coupons from each issue and sending them with the candidate’s name. The contest ends at noon on April 26 1894 with the top vote getter receiving a ladies gold watch. subscribers may cast 100 votes by paying one year in advance.
The watch contest draws growing excitement as it nears its end. Koehler and Palmateer lead, with Suit or and others gaining votes. Patrons are urged to subscribe or renew for the prize worthy weekly. Baseball prospects at Kansas University show interest despite faculty bans on playing professionals.
A large audience filled University chapel as the Eastern Kaunas Teachers meeting opened with invocations and welcomes. Leaders praised teaching, discussed Normal Schools and curriculum, and highlighted scientific methods, with recitals and a final concerto. Saturday sessions featured papers on kindergarten significance, four-year programs, and school discipline, followed by round tables and officer elections.

Quarterly report to Washington shows Lawrence post office revenue from the year. Stamps and box rents bring in 6512.52 and 106.75 dollars, total 6619.57. Disbursements include salaries and rents 4304.04 and surplus sent to department 2316.53.
Lawrence reports the State University plans a separate water system near Mount Oread. Two new wells, 50 and 35 feet deep, plus 50 feet of laterals, will supply about 1,000 gallons per day with 10,000 stored in tanks atop the main building tower. An electric pump costing about $400 will provide water at low cost while the university completes its independent system.
The weekly Gazettes plan to award a gold Elgin movement watch on April 26 to the county’s most popular young lady. The exhibit is at the University Book Store window, formerly Field & Gibb, with plush case. Also noted is the School Districts No 47 and 52 report for April showing attendance figures and tardies, with teacher Scorr Martin mentioned.
