Flatboat Captain Curtis Aims for New Orleans Voyage
Captain Curtis and two companions navigate the Kaw River with the 48 foot flatboat Hail-Columbia moored near the Kaw dam for days. The craft includes a cabin dining room and carpenter shop and will sell traps along the route to farmers while Curtis provides veterinary medicine. They plan a DeSoto stop tonight then Kansas City for three weeks and expect to reach New Orleans early next fall. Curtis is about 63 and this is his fourth flatboat trip down the Mississippi.
