Readers choose among Ford automobile prizes and diamond rings for top vote getters across districts. Mrs L M Elha leads the Argus ballet contest in Elhaville with strong support from friends and constituents. Indications point to her and allies driving Ford out of Laurel on contest night. Prizes valued at hundreds of dollars attract active campaigning as rivals stay largely stationary week before finale. Continued on page 4.
Ellisville Miss January 8 The Board of Supervisors by a vote of 3 to 2 voted down a petition asking that a commutation road tax be levied and that road work be let by contract to the lowest bidder The motion by B DuBose and seconded by W T Johnson carried with DuBose and Johnson voting yes and Fatheree Gray son and Dyess voting nay The board ordered the minutes to show opposition to the plan and to advertise roads for bids by February First Monday 1912 with bids filed with the Chancery Clerk at Laurel by 12 oclock M.
Jackson January 9 Representative J H Bush of Jones County introduced two bills in the House clerk. One would require Bible reading in all public schools of the state. The other aims to prevent bully and male hogs from running at large. Over 133 bills were filed by 3 30 pm as both houses opened a busy session. The House passed an $80 000 appropriation for session expenses amid a spirited debate on water supplies. Pearl River water prevailed over mineral water. Senate activity centered on bill introductions.
Biloxi plans to lure the Frisco railroad to run a line into the city by offering terminal facilities and inducements. City Clerk J W Hagan mailed a request to Frisco president BL Winchell for details on incentives. Back Bay harbor and a deeper channel near Horn Island bolster Biloxi’s case for a Gulf outlet.
County Superintendent L J Stringer announces teachers will likely receive some money by the end of January. A January 13 agricultural meeting in Ellisville will discuss farm life and education with leading state educators. Teachers and patrons are urged to attend and students may join Industrial Clubs after talks by Miss Powell, Prof Powers and Prof Cobb.

In Over, Misa January 9, C P Chestain an employee of J J Fatheree ate rat poison by mistake at his employer’s home during dinner. He lacked notice of poison in the pantry and became ill, but a doctor reported he would likely recover after pumping. Also noted: Mr W A Pryor left on the noon Northeastern train for Birmingham and Montgomery.
