Murphy Uses Air Trip To Win Veto Power Amendment

In California, Senator George Murphy maneuvered to grant the Office of Economic Opportunity power over a governor’s veto on legal services projects. The 45-40 vote upset anti poverty backers as Nelson Javits and Holland clashed over the tactic. The result gave Murphy leverage to veto a presidential veto in conference.

New Deal Pledged For U S Fleet By Federal Maritime Chief

Mrs Helen Bentley newly named head of the Federal Maritime Commission urged fair competition to boost U S shipping at an American Merchant Marine conference in Savannah. She said regulators should back a healthy merchant fleet and warned against discrimination that could erode it. She noted Nixon aims to revive goals of the 1986 Merchant Marine Act and shipbuilding programs that aided World War II and the Marshall Plan.
