Where I Stand Where I Stand
The President's secret weapon would be the worst kept secret of his administration. There is an inevitability, almost a fore destiny, in the face of the little fellow at the hands of those in political authority. Forebearing and long suffering, it is fated that the burdens of the lowly citizen will get heavier and the solutions to his problems will be increasingly ineffective. In President Nixon's radio report to the American people he said he had a secret weapon in fighting rising costs. The weapon was American confidence in the strength of the economy and escaping a hopeless future on a wage price treadmill. He urged restraint on wage demands, price setting and consumer purchases. He told the housewife he was sending letters to labor and business leaders advising them to follow the government's example. He asked Congress to extend the surtax and to curb taxes.
