Meany Attacks Burns at AFL-CIO Convention
AFL-CIO President George Meany denounced Federal Reserve Chair Arthur Burns as proposing a program that would erase 40 years of social gains. He criticized Ford economic policy and Nixon legacy, urging reversal of Burns’ plan to employ the jobless as public workers and noting the low minimum wage amid inflation and unemployment concerns.

House Partially Lifts Turkish Arms Embargo
The House approved a partial lift of the arms embargo on Turkey by a 237 to 176 vote and sent the measure to the Senate which had approved it 47 to 46 earlier. It allows shipments of arms paid for before the embargo and only for NATO needs, not Cyprus forces, and enables Turkey to buy militarily in the U.S. while broader sales and credits hinge on a future aid bill. The White House argues the move preserves NATO security and intelligence in the eastern Mediterranean.
