A group of 12 Bahaman natives wielding knives stormed four resort hotels in Freeport to protest alleged racial hiring discrimination. They threatened workers and guests, and stabbed a security guard before police captured them. The incident underscores tensions over employment in the tourism sector.
McCarthy warned of great political distress if both parties nominate status quo candidates and floated a possible third party movement. He suggested Kennedy delegates might join him, taped interview from Minnesota during tornado relief visits, while other figures campaigned elsewhere.
Senator Philip A. Hart of Michigan said registration and licensing of firearms make sense as an alternative to banning mail order rifles and shotguns. He hinted he could back the administration’s ban but questions its effectiveness. Hart’s position could tilt the committee vote that currently stands 10-6 against the ban.

Thunderstorms swept the Great Plains into the Ohio Valley with heavy rain and flash flooding. A tornado was sighted in Darnell Louisiana while a severe thunderstorm watch covered parts of New Mexico Texas Oklahoma Colorado and Kansas. Local reports cited 45 mile per hour winds and high rainfall in Nebraska and Kansas with Dayton Ohio receiving more rain. Temperature drops were noted at Peliston Michigan and Butte Montana.
Former Johnson press secretary Bill Moyers predicted Hubert H. Humphrey would reveal his differences with the Johnson administration this week. Moyers, publisher of Newsday, said Humphrey likely will win the Democratic nomination while Nixon heads the Republican ticket. He noted Humphrey must distance himself from Johnson era policies to recast his own image.
Communist artillery hit a U S Navy Swift boat in the Gulf of Tonkin inflicting five deaths. Shells fired from the DMZ also struck nearby vessels as rescuers searched for missing crew members. The incident marked the first such kill of the war and drew American response at sea.
The Harris Survey finds 45 percent doubt gun control would reduce violence while 99 percent seek strict national norms against violence. Sixty six percent reject the view that violence stems from pioneer tradition and 83 percent blame radicals on the streets for rising unrest.
