County officials say Searchlight Airport will stay as an emergency landing strip. FAA tests show the strip fails to meet airliner standards in the DCS class, and improvements would cost at least 55 100 dollars. Commissioner queried if Willie Martello would fund the upgrades.

Airport study weighs creation of local airport commission
Charles Wyre traffic manager for TWA told county commissioners studies are under way to establish an airport commission here. He and Alamo Airways owner George Crockett reviewed ordinances from cities large and small and said legislation would be needed before any ordinance could be enacted. The proposal, raised earlier by Commissioner Bill Briare, envisions an advisory airport commission to assist the airport manager at McCarran. Some surveyed airports operate for profit and others rely on tax support.
