Fulbright Attacks Nixon On Vietnam By Proxy Policy
Sen. J. William Fulbright warned there can be no peace in Southeast Asia if Nixon seeks to control Vietnam by proxy through the Saigon government. He criticized Thieu ahead of a Midway Island meeting with Nixon, urging large cuts in military spending and arguing for shifting funds to civilian programs to boost employment. He cited a $1.2 trillion spend since World War I and urged negotiation with the Soviet Union on arms control. Experts warned a $1 billion defense cut could cut jobs, while civilian growth would add more.
