In Tampa Florida heavy rain stopped Led Zeppelin’s concert at Tampa Stadium igniting a riot. Police report 6 officers hurt and many fans injured with unofficial counts from 36 to 200. 3 000 to 4 000 unruly fans damaged equipment and overwhelmed ticket booths seeking refunds.
Deputy District Attorney Jim Bartley issued a six page memo declaring the Las Vegas and Clark County fire department merger illegal and unconstitutional. The opinion will be on the county commission agenda for action as officials prepare to seek a court injunction and temporary restraining order to halt the merger, which would start July 1, while litigation proceeds.
Tonya an eight year old girl asks to attend summer camp and bring her two younger brothers. The SUN Summer Camp Fund invites tax deductible donations to aid over 700 needy children in southern Nevada with listed recent donors and amounts.
In Los Angeles the Joint Council of Interns and Residents warned that staff cutbacks could cause patient deaths and that a strike is near. They cited funding for nurses and equipment as the main issue, with hospitals named as County USC Medical Center Harbor General and Martin Luther King Jr. hospitals.
Paul Michael Kodella surrendered to federal bank robbery charges and posted 150000 bail after nearly a week of negotiations led by attorney Oscar Goodman. He and accomplice Craig Otte allegedly abducted Reno N. Frazza and his wife Polly, escaping with 1.2 million, with Otte still at large. Fugitive funds not recovered. kidnapping cited but prosecuted as aggravated under federal law. Kodella must quit claim his home.
Las Vegas publisher Hank Greenspun and wife Barbara won 1 million dollars in punitive damages against Summa Corp owner the late Howard Hughes in a long running dispute over a 1967 loan and deed of trust. Judge Joseph McDaniel also awarded 53 204 in special damages and costs, rejecting claims of perjury by key witness Edward P. Morgan and upholding Morgan's testimony as truthful.
