Elmer Richard Hayes aged 23 received a 15 year prison term after pleading guilty to robbing Wild Bill's Liquors in Las Vegas last March. A off duty detective in the store shot Hayes in the hand during the holdup.
Bruce Ivan Manny a 21 year old Vietnam veteran and former Marine admitted robbing the Lee Motel clerk at gunpoint on September 2 taking 130 dollars. Dist. Judge Howard W. Babcock gave a suspended five year sentence with three years probation noting the act was senseless and no one was hurt.
Senators Cannon and Bible hailed an ICC order denying discontinuation of Western Pacific California Zephyr and Southern Pacific City of San Francisco passenger trains. The decision delays any further cuts for at least a year, citing the trains as vital to Northern Nevada communities and essential amid airline and bus travel interruptions.
About 60 North Las Vegas tenants met with the mayor City Manager and housing officials to urge relief from late rent fees and discrimination. They cited $5 late charges, eviction reinstatement fees, and a rent spike from $90 to 125 for a three bedroom home. Officials promised reviews and a second meeting in two weeks.

Nevada Test Site scientists report the Phoebus 2A nuclear reactor underwent a third power run as part of a series of tests at the Nuclear Rocket Development Station. The June 8 checkout ran at low and intermediate power, aimed to refine data on nuclear and thermal behavior for future flight-type rocket engines. The reactor, built by Los Alamos under AEC, previously reached power levels above 4000 megawatts on June 26 to demonstrate capability.
