The SUN Youth Forum panel led by moderator Richard Bryan and Mary Donaldson debated police brutality, better pay, Civilian Review Boards, and public support. Panelists defined brutality as unjustified force and majority agreed it exists in Clark County, favoring higher pay and stricter standards for new officers.
Philippine President Ferdinand E. Marcos vows Asia unity and peaceful coexistence in a 1600 word address as 800 to 1,000 security personnel guard the Independence Grandstand. He speaks of Asia choosing peace over a continental prison while 40 visiting dignitaries attend the ceremony.
Vice President Spiro Agnew attended Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos’s inauguration under tight security after an attempted bombing near the U S embassy. Explosions occurred the night before, with four unexploded devices later found outside the embassy.
Five Israeli missile launching gunboats escorted by warships and two submarines slipped past Sicily into the eastern Mediterranean. If they reach Haifa as expected, Israel would have thumbed its nose at the 1967 French arms embargo.
President Nixon is expected to sign the tax cut and reform bill today before flying to California. The White House says he will also propose new revenue raising legislation to offset Treasury losses from the measure, which Congress approved on December 22.
A major snow and ice storm swept the southern Plains into the lower Midwest and upper South bringing six foot drifts on the high plains and widespread outages. Tornadoes and high winds raked the deep South while California homes faced wind damage. As much as 40 below in Colorado and up to two feet of snow were forecast for Texas and New Mexico with dozens of communities hit by outages and travel bans. Deaths and injuries were reported across seven states with heavy rains and northeast blizzards adding to the peril.
A Las Vegas street fight between juvenile gangs left two boys wounded, none seriously. Police arrested two youths at 713 Flower Circle and sought two more on assorted charges. Identities were not released due to age. A taco stand incident sparked the clash with reinforcements.
Former Secretary of State Dean Rusk accepted an invitation to become a professor of international law at the University of Georgia amid opposition from segregationists. The State Board of Regents voted nine to four to allow the hire of the Georgia native.
Clark County Sheriff Ralph Lamb announced a curfew extension for youths under 18 on New Year’s Eve to 1 am. The curfew normally starts at 10 pm on weekdays and midnight on Fridays and Saturdays.
Louis Harris reports 73 percent support for Nixon lottery draft and 60 to 31 percent approval of his handling of the draft. The survey, conducted December 16 to 19 among 1615 adults, gauges attitudes toward birthdate based drafting with first calls by drawn dates.
