Scrooge Dinner Now Costs 28 Dollars in Modern Cash
A UPI report from Washington uses the Dickens Christmas dinner in A Christmas Carol to estimate current costs. Economists Corinne Le Bovit and Vivian Wiser of the Agriculture Department calculate a full eight-person feast from scratch would run about 27 to 28 dollars today, with costs varying by item. They compare past salaries from 1880 to 1955 and note that the meal would take about three quarters of a day's pay for a hypothetical Cratchit in today’s terms, and they describe how different ingredients influence the total. The article also notes Mrs. Doris Wright of North Las Vegas making nylon wreaths for Christmas money, describing her craft and color options.
