Americans Split Over Okinawa Return and Japan’s Role
A nationwide Harris survey shows 42 percent support a greater Japanese role in the Pacific while 37 percent oppose. Americans fear Japan’s rising power post World War II, with strongest misgivings in the South and among older, less educated groups. Stronger support for Okinawa return and a bigger Japanese role comes from the better educated, younger, and affluent, especially in the Far West. The study notes lingering doubts and calls for public education before any Okinawa return.
