White Teachers Win Battle Yet Lose Their Objective
In Harlem at P.S. 39, seven disputed white teachers returned with heavy police escort to an empty classroom. Charles E. Wilson, a Negro school administrator, housed boycott classes at a nearby church for teachers and students loyal to the local governing board. Abe Levine of the UFT claimed the seven would teach any children who came. The strike, lasting 10 weeks and ending Nov. 18, drew parental anger over the district’s defiance of Friday after Thanksgiving holiday reinstatement.
