Joshua Tree National Monument Opens In High Desert Region
The Joshua Tree National Monument lies in Riverside and San Bernardino counties south of the Mohave desert and covers about 825340 acres. It showcases basin and range geology with rounded mountains and dramatic desert flora including the rare Joshua tree Yucca brevifolia observed to 30 feet high. The area, northwest of Desert Center, hosts the new highway from Deser Center to Rice and the Los Angeles Aqueduct while the growing town of 29 Palms sits on its north boundary. Memorial ceremonies accompany the opening with dignitaries and a Spanish barbecue concluding the celebration.
