The Elks annual charity ball at the new club house featured gowns, dancing to Clark Higgins orchestra, and a cold supper. Proceeds fund cheer baskets for the needy in Las Vegas, with organizers calling it the best yet.
The Vegas schools closed last Friday for the Christmas holiday. Teachers plan vacations visiting Arizona Carson City Ely Reno Salt Lake City San Francisco and Los Angeles. Mrs Geo Johnson and Miss Copenhaver join the exodus to warm destinations for the holidays.
Mr. and Mrs. A. S. Henderson anticipate the holidays with pleasure as their two daughters arrive from Los Angeles Mrs Wanda Pegram and her husband and son Bertie and Miss Alice Henderson visit locally for the season.
Mr. and Mrs. R. J. Stephens will host a family Christmas gathering with guests from Wells Ely and Las Vegas. Attending are Mr. and Mrs. Myg Joe Bailey, Mr. and Mrs. Glen Builey and son Norman of Wells, Mr. and Mrs. Walter W. Dunley and daughter Gloria of Ely, and Mr. and Mrs. Frank Scott and son Richard Walter of Las Vegas.
The Age extends a Christmas wish to Las Vegas and its people noting the city has grown since 1905 from shacks to a thriving second city in the state. It praises healthy growth and bright prospects while urging optimism despite minor defects and past delays.
Dr Roy W Martin of this city suffered a broken knee cap and minor injuries after a Sunday night auto crash on Valley Boulevard three miles east of Ontario. His car collided with a coupe carrying Joseph Donovan and his brother. The Donovan brothers were injured but not believed to be in danger. Martin received treatment in Ontario and Los Angeles and expected to walk with his leg in a cast within a week.
Stephen E. Harvey 55 formerly of Tonopah died Monday in North Las Vegas after moving there three weeks ago to seek care for miners tuberculosis. He worked in the Tonopah mines for years. Palm Funeral Home cared for his remains and S. Gene Parks transported him to Tonopah for burial per his wishes. Funeral services were held Thursday at the local funeral home and he was laid to rest in Tonopah cemetery.
Mr. Earl Smith of Salt Lake City was a guest at Furnace Creek Inn. A mix of young people and older attendees joined a dance in Beatty Nevada last Saturday night. Although attendance was modest, those who traveled reported a fine time.
Mrs. Martin traveled from Las Vegas with Mr. Martin and boarded a Barstow train to Topeka for Christmas with her daughter Francis. Dr. Martin remained alone in his car when the accident occurred, prompting emergency measures to untie the knee cap.
A memorial plaque for the Boulder Dam workers was unveiled December 17 at the Arizona side of the Colorado River. Commissioner John C. Page presided with Ralph Lowry and Oskar J. Hansen among speakers. the plaque honors those who built the dam and those who sacrificed their lives.
