Open diplomacy and press tradeoffs in state department notes
A Daily editorial argues for candid coordination between Secretary Hughes and Washington journalists. It emphasizes open covenants and timely, agreed releases, warning that secrecy erodes trust and that newspapers will honor confidential terms when clearly defined.
WASTFUL FIREWORKS AND FEAR OF WAR ARMAMENTS

It notes most nations before World War I kept arms only defensively, except Germany, and fears defenselessness if others arm. It cites Russia France England and Italy as examples. Watch THE TIMES daily for armament news at 60c per month.

The High Cost of War Fireworks and Wasteful Destruction
The speaker argues war wastes money and manpower more than any other expense. Production advances create destructiveness, with ammunition, vehicles, and labor expended. Land is scarred, soil pulverized, and harmony lost as orchards and farms take years to recover, while time cannot be restored. Fireworks epitomize this expense and damage.
