European trade recovery shown in 1919 commerce report
The 1919 Department of Commerce foreign trade report shows Europe’s imports to the United States rising from 218.1 million to 750.6 million dollars, a 136 percent gain, while exports to Europe totalled 5.19 billion, up from 3.86 billion in 1918. The allied group exports rose despite declines for Italy and France, and December 1919 imports spiked about 80 percent year over year. Europe’s revival appears slow but gaining momentum in the latter half of 1919.
