The War Not Over on Packing Industry Split
The Supreme Court ruling against the big packing companies fuels further attacks led by Ed C Lasater of Texas cattlemen to banish the packers from meat production in favor of small local and cooperative slaughterhouses. Proponents argue large capitalization enables efficient national meat handling though critics seek a return to older systems. The price spread between live weight and dressed beef is noted as modest given processing and distribution costs.
