Dance and the Church Debate Modernizing Morals in New York
The dancing masters urge the Methodist church to liberalize rules and drop the ban on dancing. They blame strict discipline for stoking worldliness as they push for reform, while critics warn modern dances corrupt youth and threaten societal standards. A separate note covers hunger strikes and legal duties in Ireland and Britain, concluding that law must be upheld even amid protests. John Beers, cotton expert, arrives in Laredo to inspect gins and discuss grading and marketing of cotton with local growers and merchants.
