Clamming Industry Prospering Along Mississippi Valley Rivers

In Dixon Illinois and across the Mississippi Valley the clam digging trade thrives with pearl finds as a sideline. A large Dixon shipment of about 160 tons to LaCrosse Wisconsin fetched $70 a ton, later rising to $80, totaling around $10,000 for three rail cars. Clammers use long side rigs with 600 hooks to drag beds, digging shells for buttons and pearls. The season runs June to December with peak digging in spring floods and cooler late summer. Pearl values vary, with notable finds including an $850 pearl on Rock River and a $130 pearl, while most shells yield meat for bait or swine.Clams mature in August and many colors from white to black appear, with rare pinks and lavenders prized by buyers. Each digger preserves a personal treasure box of the day’s finds, while experienced clammers gauge pearl quality for sale.
