On January 25 1918 readers recall Robert Burns in solemn tribute. The verse lauds his humble origins and lasting fame from Kyle to John o Groats and across Scotland as the King of Ploughman Poets. His immortal fame shines as crowds pay homage to his memory.
An adjourned annual meeting of the Landis Grain Growers Association Ltd will be held Saturday January 26 at 2 p m at the Landis Hotel to elect officers and delegates to the annual convention. Directors meet immediately after. Joseph A Dane secretary.
The R. M. of Rosemount No 378 calls for applications to fill the Weed Inspector post for the municipality. Applicants must file at the Municipal office in Tern by Friday February 1st 1918, wage listed at 96.00 per day, and envelope marked Application for Weed Inspector. A municipal meeting will review applications at the Municipal Building.
Since the start of the year 701.19 has been sent to headquarters including 51.19 on Oct 31 400 in November and 250 in December. Provincial headquarters asks branches to launch a membership drive with a 2 annual fee and 25c badges. The executive appeals for more workers as supplies remain scarce after Halifax disaster. The note urges new groups and spare time workers to aid Red Cross for sick and wounded overseas and prays for 1918 peace.
Curling remains popular with steady attendance and improving play. The oyster supper won by the Presidents rinks showcased club strength at the Landis Hotel. Current scores show close matches as six rinks compete while some curlers attempt double-headers and Wilkie hosts the Dooley cup with a twenty four hour defense window.
