Remarkable nine tale of mulching farms and heroic one armed mason

A fragment from a late 19th century paper describes fall mulching using straw leaves or similar material with manure applied in spring to boost crop surface cover. It highlights Robert Lewin, a penniless veteran who lost an arm at Chickasaw Bluff and taught himself masonry and architecture, building a house single handedly for proof that ingenuity and perseverance can overcome severe disability. It also mentions unusual experiments with cider fermentation, preserved by old world methods, and a New York Evening Post correspondent noting carbons and clove infusion experiments.
