It references Abraham Lincoln, Sherman, trials for soldiers, and civil authority while commenting on rebellion, constitutional issues, and wartime governance. The piece blends political rhetoric with military administration details and public notices from that era.
Early mourners gathered as crowds filled streets for the funeral of a prominent leader. A long processional route moved toward the cemetery with infantry detachments, officers, and bands, while citizens from every quarter paid homage. The solemn rites drew thousands, with reverent tributes and national mourning echoing through the city.
A vivid account describes a public funeral procession through city streets ending at a cemetery. It notes the route along High Street and Monroe to Oak Ridge Cemetery, the crowd amid militia, the bugle and hymn performances, prayers, and a solemn burial with troops and district officials in attendance.

The piece reviews the April 18 meeting between Sherman and Johnston, outlining the surrender talks and cabinet instructions, noting Sherman’s stance on military surrender versus negotiation, and referencing Lincoln’s directives and the Secretary's Bulletin. It also reports on the Sultana disaster aftermath, Wilkes Booth, and cemetery burials with restrained, non-graphic language.
