Fearful Winter Rescue of Mail Driver in Northwestern Iowa
The open sleigh mail run from Sioux City to Fort Dodge, halted by a brutal snowstorm, left driver Charles Hale stranded five miles west of Dayton. After four days of freezing cold, hunger, and relentless winds, Hale trekked toward shelter, surviving by sheer endurance. He reached a Grove near Lost Grove, then a house five miles west of Dayton, where Dr. Olney and locals moved to save his life. His feet frozen, toes may be lost. the gear and horses scattered, one horse dead, the other still missing.
