General Cox Responds to Flatly Supportive Framing Letter

The correspondence from Oberlin dated July 2 1865 shows a Union Party inquiry about Cox's stance on universal suffrage for colored people. Cox replies that he supports the elective franchise for colored men and urges unity in the party, warning against excluding freedmen from voting and predicting political and social upheaval if constitutional restrictions persist.

Reconstruction Policy Debates Split Loyal Ohio Unionists

A long Lancaster Gazette letter argues that party unity must hinge on a shared platform while allowing dissent on nonessential issues. It defends a firm Reconstruction approach, calls for loyalty to the President, and warns against splitting the Union movement over race policy, with references to the 1865 conventions and constitutional rights.
