House Passes U S Farm Bill By Five Votes

The House approved a farm bill by a five vote margin to aid wheat and feed grain growers who reduce acreage. The measure moves to the Senate where debate is set for Tuesday amid expectations of quick passage.

County Native Is Promoted At Missouri U

Harold V. Walton, professor of agricultural engineering, named chairman of the agricultural engineering department at the University of Missouri. Walton, a Lancaster County native, earned BS and MS from Penn State and a PhD from Purdue. He joined Missouri in January from Penn State after 15 years there.

Ike Wins Second Rosette in Rose Marie Linton Angus Show

In the Solance Fair beet show the 905 pound Angus Little Ike, owned by Rose Marie Linton, took the grand championship after judge Harold Stewart cast a single unchallenged vote. John F., the 995 pound Hereford shown by Fred Linton Jr., was runner up as the reserve.

Solanco Dairy Exhibit Repeats Grand Champion Wins

Solanco Fair dairy show repeat champions highlighted the event with 16 year old R Edwin Harmish of Solanco High School winning his second straight grand championship for Monocacy Ayr Dixie Rosemary. John Welk of Strasburg earned the Holstein grand championship with last year’s runner up, debuting his daughter Christine Stonehurst as a new top contender. Chrissy did not compete against her dam at home with a newborn calf. John Welk, 13, is in seventh grade at Lampeter Strasburg.

Esbenshade Wins Tractor Driving at Solanco Fair

James Esbenshade, son of Mr and Mrs Milton Esbenshade of Quarryville R2, won all three divisions of Solanco Fair tractor driving with an 80 point score in a tough field including 10 Future Farmers of America members and six adults. His closest rival was Robert Wolgemuth of Peach Bottom who scored 130 points.

NFO Holding Action Heats Up With Claims Of Progress

The National Farmers Organization presses its livestock holding action into a third week. Officers claim near victory while packets claim no effect. NFO president Oren Le Staley of Rea Missouri says they are getting in the driver's seat as processors and packers react.

Berks Poultrymen To Tour County

Berks County poultrymen plan a tour of all phases from egg to chick to hen and back to egg next Tuesday. The group will visit Victor Weaver egg processing and poultry dressing at New Holland before moving to Roy Martin poultry farm at Rothsville.
