Agriculture alive at two big fairs in Pennsylvania

Kent D. Shelhamer Pa Agriculture Secretary toured Quarryville Solanco fairgrounds inspecting exhibits and livestock and addressing crowds. At York Fair nearly 3500 animals and 1800 other entries drew visitors as 1616 livestock entries and notable Clydesdales highlighted a nine day event.

USDA Raises National Loan Rates for Feed Grains

The USDA lifts national loan rates for barley corn oats rye sorghum wheat and soybeans with immediate effect. In Pennsylvania the 1977 crop rates are barley 1.60 per bushel corn 2.19 oats 1.16 rye 1.78 sorghum 1.91 wheat 2.23 soybeans 3.43. Acting Secretary John C. White cites a severe cost price squeeze prompting the move.

Harrisburg appoints Frank Bertovich as Deputy Secretary of Agriculture

Frank Bertovich of Bentleyville Washington County has been named Deputy Secretary of the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture. He was sworn in September 6 by C Delores Tucker at the Agriculture Building. Secretary Kent D. Shelhamer praised his experience with farmers and farm organizations as the department moves toward full staffing and addressing upcoming programs including the 1978 Wheat Program and Farm Bill developments.
