Frost Threat Delays Farm Work in Lancaster County
Frost warnings unsettled Lancaster County farmers last weekend though damage was avoided. County Agricultural Agent Max M. Smith notes early cold could occur again and hastens field tasks. Tobacco harvest is about 75 percent done while silage preparations for soybeans and sorghum continue. Winter oats should be sown on well drained ground this week and next, with winter barley best sown Sept 24 to Oct 6. Hessian fly free date is around Oct 10 for winter wheat. Tomato shipments are moving to market. tobacco yields remain uncertain, with county estimates at 1400 to 1500 pounds per acre though some forecasts reach 1700. A national report predicts a record corn crop despite belt drought, soybeans may exceed last year by 90 million bushels, and fall vegetables should rise nationally while fruit prospects lag. Rain cooled Lancaster County last Thursday with about one to one and a half inches reported.

Broiler Prices Fall at Lancaster Poultry Exchange
Broiler prices at the Lancaster Poultry Exchange for the week ending Sept 8 1956 averaged 19.03 cents, within a 18.75 to 20.25 cent range, far below the 1955 week’s 26 to 29.75 cent spread. The report shows 54 listed lots and 167 400 birds offered, with 48 sold for 154 000 birds. last year 50 offered and 49 sold, averaging 27.45 cents.

York InterState Fair Opens Season With Tanbark Event
Lancaster County dominated the York fair livestock shows with War wick Farms of Lititz sweeping wins. Warwick Beaming Boy led as grand champion. Warwick Princess and Warwick Flying Prince were top champions in various categories. Warwick totalled 10 championships and 12 blues as crowds packed the fairgrounds.

Flying Farmers From Pennsylvania Visit Atlantic City
A group of Pennsylvania Flying Farmers traveled by air to Atlantic City for a Labor Day weekend event. Mr. L. L. Logan of Kennett Square and others from Portersville Smicksburg and Barto attended. At the director’s meeting Logan resigned as state director after joining the national Flying Farmers Association board. Elmo Gehman was elected president 1956-57 with Gail Kimmel as vice president, Elmo Travis as treasurer, and Mrs. Logan as secretary.
