Ezra W. Martin Co Expands Hog Slaughtering Locally
The Ezra W. Martin Meat Co starts excavation for a 1.4 million dollar hog killing plant to raise capacity from 60 to 150 hogs per hour and grow output from about 300 hogs weekly to about 2,500 weekly. Company president Landis E. Hershey says few major hog slaughters exist in the area, with other large operators in Allentown and Hatfield and none in Berks York Lebanon or Adams counties. The new plant will be a slaughtering and chilling facility mainly for hogs, with about 15 percent of output currently beef. Federal standards push many operators to newer plants, though some small operators under 20 hogs per hour remain exempt.
