Eye Standards Adopted by Pennsylvania Grading Eggs
The State Department of agriculture adopted new egg standards to begin January 1, 1958. The rules require producer or distributor identity and address on containers, express grades and weights on each package, and introduce a wholesale grade and revised tolerances. Secretary William L. Henning said the changes boost consumer confidence and improve product identification.

Philadelphia and Chester Counties were added to the Pennsylvania brucellosis free list, bringing total certified counties to 59. Philadelphia has 17 dairy herds certified, testing began in 1956 with 300 cattle in 17 herds tested, while Chester counted 40 160 animals across 1 917 herds. Infection must be below one percent for herd certification.

Milk Prices Higher as Pennsylvania Milk Output Falls
Milk production in Pennsylvania continued its seasonal decline while wholesale prices rose. September output reached 512 million pounds, up from last year’s 509 million and August’s 342 million. Wholesale price on September 15 averaged 5.30 per 100 pounds, 50 cents above August and above last year. For the first nine months, state production was 1 percent below 1956.

Corn Test Results Demonstrations Planned in Lancaster County
