Cow comfort basics in barn systems stressed by Grout
Roger Grout, Penn State Specialist, told area DHIA supervisors and county agents at the Southeast Pa Conference that cow comfort is fundamental in barn systems and that efficiency in milk production is also essential. He contrasted free stalls with stanchion barns, noting the modern stanchion barn has larger stalls and easy access for workers, while hay storage above the barn may be prudent. Mechanization and gutter cleaners save labor, and single story barns are used where silage dominates the diet.
