A Lititz farm owned by Mr and Mrs Lloyd G Flory produced two sets of twins in a single year as all ewes lambed by early September. The 19 Dorsetts and two grade Suffolks were weaned and rebred, with lambs appearing in March and again at the end of August.
Farm Calendar notes the fifteenth annual conference of Soil Conservation District directors at the Abraham Lincoln Hotel in Reading starting October 17 with an evening officers meeting. Banquet October 18 at 6 30 p.m. A Lancaster County toll begins October 19 at 4 30 a.m. Events include a 7 p.m. beekeepers roundup, a Honey Producers meeting, Manheim Young Farmers at Ingh school, Farm Laws discussion, and County Agricultural Council final Business Farm day reports at Roseville Road Production Credit Building.
Lancaster businessmen spent a day with rural hosts for the fourth annual Business-Farm Day. Panels at Conestoga Valley High School discussed farm problems and mutual concerns, noting labor costs as a major issue facing family farms.
Harold J Brubaker of Mount Joy Ril returned from the National Dairy Cattle Congress in Waterloo Town with a blue ribbon for judging and two head of purebred cattle for his farm. He led a three man Pennsylvania FFA team that placed in the top 10 using a Danish scoring system and won a gold plaque at the national contest. The herd additions came from Dr John A McHitrick of Dublin Ohio, with both cows rated Excellent. McHitrick's herd is noted as having many Excellent cows nationwide.
Pennsylvania Farmers Association head Gerald Biggs told 170 county members at their annual banquet that future battles will pits city people against rural voters and big government against citizens. He attacked the Supreme Court and the Agriculture Department, calling Secretary Cochran a smooth politician and saying land ownership is a title rather than ownership. The remarks foreshadowed a broader farm policy fight.
Tobacco leaf operations represented by Frank T Greenstein of Consolidated Cigar and others at a Lancaster County Young Farmers Association meeting said inventories are high but other factors could favor growers. They noted Havana leaf imports may be substituted with type 41 seedleaf and that buyers want more hand suckering, though M.H.30 use may limit that.
Formation of a fruit and vegetable marketing cooperative for Lancaster County will be the subject of a meeting next Wednesday evening. County Agent Max M Smith said producers have asked for a meeting to discuss need market outlets finances producer interest and support and other factors. The meeting at 8 pm October 17 in the Farm Cooperative building Dillerville Pike is open to all vegetable and fruit producers and interested persons in the county.
The forecast calls for temperatures five days out to run four to seven degrees above normal, with nights around 46 and afternoons near 67. Cooler Saturday gives way to warmer Sunday then a dip Monday. Expected precipitation totals 0.1 to 0.5 inch as showers and possible thunder showers late Sunday and Tuesday.
