Ruoss Franklin R2 from Ephrata topped the all breed swine show at the New Holland Farmers Fair near New Holland. The grand champion was a 220 pound Duroc shown by Ruoss. Reserve grand champion Hampshire was shown by Robert Fisher East Earl. The fitting contest went to Ruoss and the showmanship award to Fisher.
Sheryl Weaver, 15, daughter of Mr and Mrs Lester Weaver, won grand champion baby beef at the New Holland Farmers Fair. Her black 4H Amegas sold for a record 78 cents a pound to Melvin Kolb. Linford Martin claimed reserve grand champion with an Angus, selling for 40 cents per pound to Ess Kay Packing. A total of 23 head sold for 90023 at the New Holland Sales Stables after the show.
Ralph Horchler, native of Lawrence County, is named Vocational Agricultural Director succeeding Henry Givler at Pequea Valley. He comes from New Wilmington High School and has dairy and beef farm experience plus FFA cattle and swine background. Continued on Page 6.
Sunday events include Fire Prevention Week from 12 30 p m to 4 p m and a Wildlife Club fossil hunt. Monday schedules feature an NEPPCO tour to Lancaster and an open house at NEBA Tunkhannock at 8 00 pm. Ayrshire Jersey Club meets at Richard B befever Quarryville R1.
The Lancaster County Poultry Association plans its October 26 banquet with Sidney D. Troy of Poultry Breeders International as guest speaker. Troy will present an illustrated talk titled Before During and After The Six Day War about the Arab Israeli conflict. Tickets are available from directors or secretary Mrs Paul F McGarvey.
The Lancaster County Livestock Tour will begin Thursday October 19 at 7 am from the Lancaster Shopping Center. M M Smith the county agent says the bus will visit Acme Market Warehouse in Philadelphia Lee Tire Company Conshohocken Morgan Feed Lots at Doylestown and Kings Ranch Coatesville RS Picnic Ranch to be taken along and eaten in a park Advanced reservations are due by Monday October 16.
Twenty one Lancaster County FFA members and Yo-Ag instructors from three schools depart early Saturday for the National FFA Convention in Kansas City Missouri October 10 to 13. The trip aims to provide chapter leaders leadership training and insight into the National FFA organization. Ephrata High School teacher Charles B Ackley notes the group includes Eugene Bollinger Denver R2 Raymond Bollinger Levi Henry Jay Smoker and Earl Stauffer from Ephrata with Elizabethtown High School participants led by Elvin Hess.
