Junior Exhibitors Win Angus Group At Timonium
Despite chilly rain, Lancaster County youths won the Angus group in the junior show at the Eastern National Livestock Exposition in Timonium Maryland. Five members exhibited the top Angus steers for the fifth straight year while Jed Hess won the junior Hampshire lamb championship and reserve in the trio class. Penn State dominated judging contests with multiple champions and placings across cattle and sheep events.

Penn State to Show 56 Animals At International Livestock Show
Penn State University entries for the 58th International Livestock Exposition in Chicago include 56 animals across cattle and sheep divisions. Breeding cattle feature five Aberdeen Angus, three Herefords, three Shorthorns with champions from last year noted. fat steers include multiple Angus Hereford and Shorthorn entries. Sheep displays list ten Hampshire breeding, six wether Hampshire, six Shropshire, five Southdown, with notable Pennsylvanian and Maryland breeders represented.

Is Time to Cull Low Producers and Dehorn Calves
Dairymen facing a roughage shortage should cull low producers as profitable cows yield more net income. A cow producing at least 300 pounds of butterfat per lactation covers costs. Keep heifers growing but avoid excessive fat around udders. Remove horns from calves early using safe methods. electric dehorners are popular.
Soil District To Hold Tour On Conservation
Lancaster County Soil Conservation District directors adopt a conservation tour and two farm forestry demonstrations for the coming year. Plans include watershed meetings exhibits slide talks and an essay contest on soil conservators while expanding outreach to farmers not yet engaged. The annual district meeting and dinner are set for February 20 at Hostetter's Banquet Hall Mt Joy with speakers Dean Hoffer and Dr G D McKlven. The district has twice won national soil and water awards.

The State Department of Agriculture reports the lowest hay and roughage on hand in 20 years as drought reduced supplies across Pennsylvania. Nov 1 estimates show 77 percent of normal with southeastern counties at 63 percent and northern areas at 86 to 95 percent, while drought and low rainfall cut tobacco and corn yields, raising prices and lowering farm incomes.
