Local Riders Invited to Try Luck at Harrisburg Rodeo

Pennsylvania cowboys may compete for about 10000 dollars in prize money at the World Championship Rodeo in Harrisburg during the first Pennsylvania Livestock Exposition. Riders must be ready by 730 p.m. for evening shows and 1 30 p.m. for Saturday matinee. Miss Lynda Humes of Waterford will be honored as a 1957 Livestock Exposition queen. Entry fees vary from 15 to 35 dollars for events like steer wrestling calf roping bareback and saddle bronc with a 75 206 in total premium awards and thousands of cattle from 29 states and Canada.

Turkey breeder flocks to shrink in 1958 survey shows

Based on Oct 1 surveys by the Crop Reporting Board turkey breeder hen owners expect four percent fewer heavy breed hens and thirteen percent fewer light type hens at the start of the 1958 hatching season than in 1957. The report draws on data from the 15 leading turkey producing states.

Feeder Calf Sale Tops $63 a Hundredweight in Lancaster

The third annual Feeder Calf sale at Lancaster Union Stock Yards yielded a top price of $63 a hundredweight for a top feeder steer entered by Homer T Gabel. A total of 303 head from across the Commonwealth and Maryland weighed 150,980 pounds sold for $37,620.04, averaging $24.91 per cwt and 498 pounds per animal.

County Guernsey Dairyman to Head Breeders Dinner

Eugene Harding of Brookville, owner of Pennsylvania’s top producing Guernsey herd, will be guest of honor and speaker at the County Guernsey Breeders Association annual meeting. The dinner begins 6 45 p m November 15 at Rhoads Spanish Tavern Quarryville. Tickets cost 1 50 from Frank Hershey Lancaster secretary. Director election to follow.

Lebanon Girl Wins Grand Champion at SE 4-H Show

A Lebanon girl exhibited an 1080 pound Hereford to the Grand Champion at the Southeast District 4-H Baby Beef and Lamb Club Show, the first district grand champion for Lebanon County since the event began. Her steer weighed 1150 pounds at judging and cost 139.10 dollars when bought as a 535 pounder at New Holland.

Keystone Farmers See Higher Prices for Farm Products

Pennsylvania farmers in the month to Oct 15 reported higher prices for potatoes hay milk dairy animals and eggs while prices for corn soybeans and apples fell. The prices received index rose to 260 percent of the 1910 14 base from 257 percent a month earlier with nationwide indices at 240 and 245 percent. Feed costs dropped slightly with only hay rising by 150 a baled ton.
