Lancaster County broilers raised by H Harold Miller in Conetoga R2 reached 1 706 birds over eight weeks. They sold at 401 pounds per case, and the flock produced a pound of meat with under two pounds of feed. Weather is cited as a key factor.
Lancaster County Swine Producers Association schedules two sales and an annual meeting and banquet for 1962. A bred gift and fall boat sale is set for February 24 at Paul Z. Martin Sales Barn Blue Ball. The annual market hog sale at Lancaster Union Stockyards is tentatively March 14. Breeders must consign by January 10 to Earl Fisher East Earl for the February sale. Gifts should be bred after November 10. The annual meeting date is March 23 with no site chosen yet.
Farm calendar items list regional gatherings from Nov 6 to 16. Events include the Pennsylvania Livestock Exposition in Harrisburg and meetings of 4-H Leaders, Vocational Agriculture teachers, Agronomy dealers, and Interstate Milk Producers Cooperative. A Chicken Bar-B-Que is scheduled by the Lancaster County Poultry Association, with the Eastern National Livestock Exposition at Timonium, Maryland.
William M. Carroll of Pennsylvania State University urged farmers and processors to cooperate in local resource management. Speaking to 140 members and 86 farmers at Hotel Brunswick he highlighted Lancaster County’s strong market and 100 processing plants employing 10 000, noting high transportation costs can exceed production costs.
One of eleven Penn State Extension agronomy meetings will be held at Hostetter's Banquet Room in Mount Joy on November 9 beginning at 10 a.m. The program targets seed and fertilizer dealers and custom spray operators with participants from Chester Dauphin Delaware Lehigh Philadelphia York and southern Berks Counties along with Lancaster.
The 11th annual Lancaster County Holstein-Friesian Association meeting and banquet will be held November 13 at 6 45 PM at the Dutch Town and Country Restaurant near Vintage. Grant Hurst will speak on Developing a Good Sense of Humor. Tickets are available from banquet committee members Elvin M Rohrer Jr Clyde M Buchen and Ray Boilinger before November 6.
Brattleboro Vermont couple Herbert and Rhelda E. Royer of 2025 Oregon Pike earned the Progressive Breeders' Award the top honor for Holstein breeders. The Holstein-Friesian Association of America has granted this to only 469 breeding outfits nationwide, with the Royers as the 50th recipients from Pennsylvania. The award recognizes excellence in dairy cattle breeding and management across production, type, herd health, and home-bred animals.
Amos Funk and Elmer V. Good of the Lancaster County Soil Conservation District say city residents gain from conservation programs more than farmers. Delegates attended a two day conference at a Bloomsburg urban area, showing land management benefits to urban residents out of touch with farm problems.
A Lititz girl, Shirley Hershey, won her second straight Lancaster County 4 H Capon Club title at a Kiwanis luncheon in Hotel Brunswick. Hershey exhibited three dressed birds averaging 8.14 pounds, noting this year’s birds were slightly lighter than last year’s champion weight. she is 13 and attends Warwick Junior High School.
Larry Weaver was reelected president of the Grasslands Chapter of Future Farmers of America at a club meeting. Other officers include Wilmer Martin as vice president Richard Martin as secretary Carl Gehman as treasurer Clyde Wissler as sentinel Warren Good as reporter Kenneth Martin as chaplain and several assistant officers. Advisors are Robert Herr and Gene Daugherty of Garden Spot High School.
The forecast calls for five days with afternoon highs near normal to a few degrees above, ranging from 39 to 58. Warmer air early then cooler toward the middle and end. Showers possible Saturday with light rain later in the period, totaling more than a percent.
