In a May 2 1964 Wheat Farmers Decision editorial readers were told participation equated to voting for the program. The letter from Lancaster argues the view is incorrect noting that engaging in the program follows required procedures and does not imply blanket agreement with the policy.
The notes ask if accepting an income tax refund implies agreement with tax programs, whether refusing refunds avoids taxes, and if avoiding wheat program participation still allows milling or export. They also question whether participation binds voting or speech, and if farmers can change or remove the law by not participating.
The third annual Lancaster County Soil Conservation District plowing matches set for July 23 with a rain date July 27. District secretary Henry E Givler said the field day of agency exhibits may be held at the same site, to be announced by June 8. The winner advances to the state contest July 29 at Freeport Franklin County.
