Weevil activity in Lancaster County alfalfa fields runs high this year and peak damage is not yet reached says Arnold Lueck associate county agent. John B Washko Penn State University recommends early harvesting to minimize damage and preserve nutrient quality. Field trials show stands tolerate early bud stage cuts with additional harvests at 1/10 to 1/2 bloom to build root food reserves.

Gingerich Named Secretary Of Lancaster Soil District
At the Lancaster County Soil and Water Conservation District meeting Garland Gingerich was elected secretary to replace Henry Givier who resigns to take on more school duties. Givier has served five years as secretary and teaches vocational agriculture at Pequea Valley High School. The board also discussed the county plowing contest and field day planned for late July and Soil Stewardship Week events May 23 to 30.

Cloister FFA Leader Plans Farming Career After Graduation
Cliff Bollinger, 17, president of the Cloister FFA, aims to return to Meadow Spring Farm at Lititz after graduating from Ephrata High School. His family operates 233 acres with 200 Holsteins and 100 beef cattle, plus a 124 acre crop and cattle-finishing operation. He recently won the Lancaster York County FFA tractor driving contest.

Dairy Barn Remodeling Observed On DHIA Four-Farm Tour
Approximately forty bounty dairymen and interested persons toured four farms in the county to view remodeling and expansion of dairy barns. Led by Victor Plastow and Roger Grout, the group visited Garber’s Lancaster farm with 66 stalls and a 44 cow herd, noting the free stall plan and a homemade 360 degree scraper attachment for alley cleaning.

Dale Hershey Named Outstanding Senior At Manheim FFA Banquet
Dale Hershey received the Outstanding Senior Award at the Manheim FFA 13th annual Parents Lion awards banquet held in the night school cafeteria with 110 attendees. The Bankers' Association of Lancaster County presented the honor, and Norman Weaver of Manheim National Bank performed the presentation. Hershey also earned the DeKalb award for meeting their goal.
