Lancaster County farmers show two arends with corn growth and silage use rising over four years while small grains decline. Grassed waterways help prevent soil erosion as land shifts to corn, especially on slopes over three percent per SCS guidance.
At the first annual 4H Conservation Club roundup held Monday night at Ephrata High School Clark Stauffer won a plaque for best all around performance He was judged on his record book and his first place exhibit showing cover crops to control erosion His entry included photos and soil displays with and without cover crops Curtis Horst Debbie Schantz also received plaques for second and third place The event was a joint effort of Northern and Southern Lancaster County 4 H Conservation Clubs and was judged by Charles Slaton and Henry Hackman with Winthrop Merriam presenting plaques The report notes Ronald Stauffer placed first in the district division of the State Conservation Contest.

Lancaster County Swine Producers Association reelected officers for 1957 68 and added James Horton from Masonic Homes Farm Elizabethtown as a new director for a three year term. John Henkel remained president Warren Leininger vice president and James Martin continued as secretary treasurer.
Win Merriam announced this week he will resign from the county extension staff in June to join West Virginia University at Voreantown as State Extension Program Leader for 4 H and Youth Development. He arrived in 1958 as assistant county agent and was promoted to associate agent in 1962. He said he regretted leaving the county after nine years but called the new opportunity too good to pass up.
A registered Holstein cow owned by John J W Harnish Beaver Valley Pike posted the top 305 day lactation in April with 21681 pounds of milk and 889 pounds of butterfat The Fisher herd owned by Joseph L Fisher had the highest monthly butterfat average per the Red Rose Dairy Herd Improvement Association Continued on Page 4
The weather man expects temperatures to stay below average for five days with a cooler pattern through the period and milder temperatures by mid week. Additional rain is forecast with totals over a half inch expected this weekend.
