Oak and Hickory Regrowth After Clearcutting Studied at Penn State

Five years after clearcutting mixed oak and hickory forests at Penn State’s Stone Valley Experimental Forest in Huntingdon County on a 1965 cut, sprouts from stumps drive rapid regeneration. Scarlet oak yielded the most sprouts. white oak had the most sprouts per stump. Deer browse rose early, then declined as height reached seven feet by 1970. Dr. Robert D. Shipman notes site quality and inherent sprouting affect results. management may require selective weeding to favor desirable crop trees.
