Local FFA Members Compete in Oklahoma Land Contest
Dale Groff of Ephrata, son of Mr and Mrs Clarence Groff, competed in the International Land Judging Contest in Oklahoma City this week as a senior in Ephrata High School and Cloister FFA. He earned his spot by winning first in the Pennsylvania State FFA Land Judging Contest at Penn State last summer. Teammates include Richard Clouser of Schuylkill Haven and Galen Holtzapple of Selinsgrove with coach Lewis Ayers, agriculture teacher at Ephrata High School.

FFA Holds First Horticulture Contest in Lancaster County
Gary Shelly, a junior in Mount Joy's ornamental horticulture program, wins the Lancaster County FFA Tree Plant Identification Contest at Mount Joy. Eight contestants from Brownstown and Mount Joy Vo-Tech Schools competed, with Mount Joy taking the team prize. Individual placements follow Shelly with Morrison second, Sige third, Neu Stadter fourth, and Aiment fifth. A joint Lancaster Chester County event may be planned next year. Floriculture students at the vo-tech schools will hold their own contest in May.

Secretary of Agriculture Clifford Hardin outlined the nationwide Salute to Agriculture program at the White House on May 7. President Nixon announced the event to honor farmers and agri business leaders with briefings, a luncheon, USDA exhibit, and a White House dinner. The day features Kissinger and Mitchell briefings and a women’s morning program at the National Arboretum.

Rain Delays Fire Ban Extension Across State
A spring storm eased severe dryness but fire officials say the open fire ban in forested areas will persist through the weekend. Chief Eugene F McNamara of the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Resources calls for at least a half inch of rain statewide to safely rescind the ban. Farmers still hope for a soaking rain after planting.

Bensinger wins Lancaster County Dairy Products contest
Adolph Bensinger of Solanco FFA captured first place in the Lancaster County Dairy Products Contest at Penn Dairies Lancaster. He earned a traveling trophy and qualified for a Penn State University meet June 30 to July 2. A series of readings lists events across Lancaster County from May 1 to May 8 including pony shows, Be Kind to Animals Week activities, and meetings for poultry, vocations, fruit growers, and farm associations.
