Dairy Day Program Set Tuesday March 11

The Lancaster County Dairy Day program announced by the County Extension Service will be held at the Farm and Home Center on Tuesday March 11. Victor Plastow reports the all day schedule including a promotional film The Dairy Industry and a talk on herd health problems related to mastitis by Dr. Samuel Guss.

DHIA Directors Vote 1000 Gift for Farm and Home Drive

Lancaster County Red Rose DHIA directors approve a $1000 donation to the Farm and Home Foundation completion fund campaign. Treasurer Jacob Houser Jr is to present the check to campaign co chairs and secure newspaper coverage. New officers were elected for the coming year.

Crops And Soils Program Highlights Corn Costs

Farm management expert notes that under certain labor savings corn can cost under 1 dollar per bushel. Lancaster County Crops and Soils day features 12 farmers from four counties sharing costs, showing per bushel ranges from 56 cents to 239 dollars, with current prices making some farmers hesitate to raise corn.

New Green Wood Chipping Plant Turns Logs Into Poultry Litter

A New Holland facility at 403 South Custer Avenue soil uses whole logs up to 15 feet long to produce wood chips for poultry litter. Denver Wood Products Inc a unit of Victor F Weaver Inc runs the operation started in August 1968 moving from a Reams town Adamstown site. Earl Groff manages the plant which receives pulpwood logs by bundles and uses a large chipping machine described as a sauerkraut maker to turn logs into litter chips.

Hippies Prefer Milk Dairymen Told At Meet

At the Inter-State District 7 annual meeting in Mt. Joy Dr. James C Honan urged dairymen to connect with consumers. He warned riots disrupt milk deliveries and affect lower class sales, as he discussed public perceptions and the need to reduce antagonism toward farmers.

Lancaster Soil and Water District Dinner March 4

The Lancaster County Soil and Water Conservation District announces its annual dinner meeting set for Tuesday March 4 at the Farm and Home Center 1383 Arcadia Road. The event begins 6 30 p m with a public presentation by Chuck Slaton and a family style chicken dinner. Tickets cost 3 25 per plate and reservations are due by Monday March 3 via Vincent Hoover at 786 3227.
