Penn State Specialists Discuss Herd Health at Lancaster Meeting

Penn State dairy specialists Dr. Samuel Guss and Donald Ace led a Farm and Home Center talk with Lancaster County farmers on herd health and forage management. Ace warned against single forage programs like all silage and noted risks of high silage rations affecting intake and digestion. The session touched on balancing alfalfa with other forages during lactation and the current uncertainties before recommending corn silage as a total ration.

Crops And Soils Day Set For Tuesday In Lancaster County

The Lancaster County Crops and Soils Day will be held Tuesday February 25 at the Farm and Home Center. Arnold G. Lueck says exhibits open at 8 30 am with speakers from Penn State including two Extension Agronomists and an Entomologist. A State Wildlife Service speaker and a local agent will also take part. Timely topics featured.

Farm & Home Foundation reports $35,554 progress on drive

Officials of the Farm & Home Foundation Completion Fund Campaign announced a first overall progress report showing $35,554 subscribed to date toward a $150,000 capital appeal. Co chairmen John H Herr and Lawrence H Skromme cited divisions in reporting and noted many assignments remain incomplete as of Friday.

State-Wide Poultry Symposium Brings Specialists To Local Area

A state-wide Poultry Symposium titled Pennsylvania's Challenge: Competitive Egg Production and Marketing was held at the Farm and Home Center Thursday with Penn State staff describing cost comparisons and the impact of operation size. Roland Leach stressed energy and protein as key ingredients and cautioned on late production drops, advising limited phase feeding.

Crossbreeding and Low Confinement Discussed at Penn State Swine Meet

Monday night at the Swine Educational meeting at the Farm and Home Center Penn State speakers Grant Sherritt and Dwight Younkin outlined crossbreeding methods rotational crossbreeding and criss crossing using two breeds. They stressed stock availability as the key for choosing methods and noted three essential swine traits Sow Productivity Feed Lot Performance and Carcass Trait. Crossbreeding mainly boosts female vigor while reducing sow productivity impact on carcass traits remains minimal.

Visit to Ephrata Highlights Vocational Agriculture Program

Lancaster Farming visits Ephrata Area High School to review the Lew Ayers Charles Ackley taught program. Students split time between classroom study and shop work with emphasis on record keeping farm mechanics and supervised occupational experiences in dairy cattle swine sheep poultry and field crops leading to pre graduation ag business exposure.
