FHA Recreation Loans Help Local Farmers Develop Enterprises

Farmers Home Administration in Lancaster County promotes loans to create farm based recreation ventures. County supervisor Richard Hoover lists eligible projects including vacation cabins ponds lakes boating fishing vacation farms riding stables nature trails picnic grounds and youth camps. Spruce Villa Dairyman Sells Jug Milk From Farm Store

Milton Brubaker of Spruce Villa DairY operates a 35 head Ayrshire herd and sells jugged milk at his own farm store just north of Lititz on Route 501 detour. Under PMCC rules a dairyman may sell his own jugged milk at his price as long as the milk is produced on his farm and processed in his plant. Brubaker notes the investment mirrors expanding the herd and stresses the added costs of retailing farm products.

Penn State Studies Milk Flavor Instability Under USDA Grant

Penn State University scientists will study milk flavor instability from secretion to storage under a $124,810 USDA grant. The basic research aims to identify milk constituents causing flavor changes, tracing them to their origins as part of a broader Agricultural Research Service effort.

Merrynook Tiptop Patricia a Registered Holstein cow in Harold M Umble Atglen Pa has been officially classified Excellent the highest designation in the Holstein Friesian Association of America program. Area Holsteins Completing New Milk Records

Official Holstein records list milk and butterfat levels for area cows. Dairymen Elam Bollinger Manheim and Dunloggin Gretchen small herds posted 20260 pounds milk and 775 pounds fat in 332 days. Dean Janaya from Lyndo, El Lyndo, appears among featured cows.
