Conservation Directors Discuss Farming Trends With Planners

Lancaster County Soil and Water Conservation District directors met County Planning Commission director Ellis Harned for an informal session at the County Office Building. They reviewed charts and maps to gauge how industrial and population growth over the past decade shapes farm development and housing expansion, noting 1920 to 1950 population was steady while 1950 to 1980 saw an 18 percent surge.

All American Dairy Show Names Top Pennsylvania Officials

Ten prominent farmers and as many dairy educationists were named to top roles in the September 13 to 17 Pennsylvan ia All American Dairy Show. State Secretary of Agriculture Leland H. Bull said the event, still new, will be held at the State Farm.

Three Countians Triumph in Regional 4-H Finals

Three Lancaster County 4 H members topped regional competition among 13 counties at Owen J Roberts High School Chester County. Dallas Wolgemuth Mount Joy, Nancy Frey, and another top demonstrator were chosen to represent the region in the 4 H state finals at Penn State University in early August.

Second Phase Of Ohio 4 H Exchange Begins

Four Ohio 4 H youth completed a week with county members and returned July 18. The second phase starts July 26 with the hosting group traveling to Ohio by car for a reciprocal visit. Participants include Janice Keeney Averill Royer Gerald Wagner and Barrett Berry.

Hunter Named State Soil and Water Commission Specialist

Ralph W. Hunter of Harrisburg, a pioneer conservationist, is appointed program specialist in the State Soil and Water Conservation Commission. He spent 30 years with the Soil Conservation Service, U S Department of Agriculture, most recently as area conservationist overseeing a 17 county southeast Pennsylvania region.

Tom Zartman Builds Farming Future In Livestock

A feature on 16 year old Thomas Zartman of Ephrata Pa who has created significant equity in livestock and farm assets. He operates a 72 acre farm with his parents Ira Zartman, plans to expand by adding a modern farrowing house and finishing unit to finish market hogs. He is a senior at Ephrata High School and continues to work off the farm hauling hay and straw.

Dutch Days And Poultry Festival To Brighten Aug

The Pennsylvania Poultry Federation will host thousands during the week of August 24 29 as it holds its 1965 summer festival at Hershey The schedule includes a statewide chicken barbecue selection of the 1965 66 Pennsylvania Poultry Queen Bantam Show and several educational features Held in Hershey Park 12 miles east of Harrisburg the festival is annual in conjunction with Pennsylvania Dutch Days during a week of special agricultural events

County 4 H Delegates Attend Citizenship Short Course

Thirty nine member southeastern Pennsylvania delegation heads to Washington next week for a week long Citizenship Short Course. From Lancaster County William Houser Lampeter Carol Hess Strasburg and Pat Yunginger Marietta are chosen on merit from county 4 H members over 14 years old.

Meeting Planned For Vegetable Growers July 29

Lancaster County vegetable growers are invited to a July 29 meeting at 639 pm at the Penn State Southeastern Field Research Farm near Landisville. The session will review 58 commercial and experimental sweet corn varieties planted in replicated plots spanning early to late maturity. Arnold Lueck notes this is an excellent trial and urges attendance. Penn State vegetable expert J O Dutt will discuss the tests and yield data for some early varieties.

Poultry Judging Team To Be Formed Soon

A 4 H poultry judging team will be formed in the county soon said Winthrop Merriam associate agricultural agent. The team will have four members and compete at the State 4 H Days on August 10 at Penn State University.

Weather Forecast Calls for Cooler Tempos Through Midweek

Five day outlook from Saturday to Wednesday expects below normal temperatures with highs near 87 and lows around 66. Warmer days slated for Saturday and Sunday followed by cooler conditions and more than 1 inch of precipitation through mid period as showers and thunderstorms.
