At a three day FFA convention in Garden County 1500 blue-clad Future Farmers and advisors gathered for educational demonstrations athletic events and contests. Seven gold medals were awarded plus six silver three bronze and several honorable mentions to local chapters including Pequea Valley and Warwick.
Ann Overgaard led the Lancaster County 4 H strawberry roundup at the weekend fair, winning blue ribbon for the third straight year. Kenneth Nissley and Mrs Charles Isley placed second and third in a dense field, with Lois Ann achieving a perfect 100 in the exhibit scoring.
The Lancaster County Soil and Water Conservation District schedules the second annual field day for August 2 at Gerald Darlington's Speedwell Forge farm in Lititz. Chairman John Kitch announces the event building on last year’s exhibitions, demonstrations and tours to show good conservation practices. Sponsored by the district directors, the program invites visitors to learn on site.
Mary E. Grube of Lititz R. is appointed Summer Assistant Home Economist for Lancaster County by Pennsylvania State University. She just finished her junior year in home economics at Mansfield State College, was a long time 4 H member, and serves in several campus honors groups while assisting with extension work in Lancaster County.
Yocum, a June graduate in agronomy from Pennsylvania State University, will become director of the station near Landisville starting September 1. He now assists Terrill on the farm while learning laboratory procedures. The 21-year-old agronomist grew up near Bloomsburg and attended Roaring Creek Valley Joint High School in vocational agriculture. At Penn State he led the Agronomy Club and several agricultural honor societies. Terrill resigns as director to take a position at North Carolina State University to pursue a PhD in agronomy.
Three new grain varieties impressed at the Southeastern Field Laboratory field day. Redcoat wheat and Norline oats released for production in the past two years showed strong performance, while a yet unreleased barley named Awnless Hudson emerged promising for resistance and yield.
Russell Drumm, longtime vocational agriculture teacher at Calico High School, will teach at Manheim Central next year. He will replace Joseph McGahen, who takes a leave to pursue a Master of Science at Pennsylvania State University. Drumm is a Lancaster County native and Quarryville High School alumnus.
Five Lancaster County 4 H members will be among the club officers from across the state at the annual leadership training conference at Pennsylvania State University from June 19 to 23. Selected members include Elvin Hess son of Mr and Mrs Titus Hess Bareville R1.
The five day outlook shows temperatures about two degrees below normal nights and afternoons, with a cool turn after the weekend. Precipitation may total 0.2 to 0.6 inches mainly Monday night or Tuesday. June's first half in Lancaster had rainfall near normal and daytime highs 5 to 6 degrees above normal.
