Farmer Holds 60 Tobacco For His Asking Price
Earl M. Barley of Lancaster R2 farms between Central Manor and Letort and is planting his 1961 tobacco crop. His 1960 crop still in the shed, he set a price others matched by buyers who paid less. He will trim tobacco acreage from 30 acres to about 10 this year as he also grows potatoes tomatoes and feed grains.

York and Lancettes Hold Joint Meeting on Farm Plans

Elizabethtown Names New Vocational Agriculture Teacher
Elvin Hess of Elizabethtown has been elected teacher of vocational agriculture at Elizabethtown Area High School, replacing Martin Henninger who resigns to return to Lykens Valley to join the family feed mill and farm machinery business. Henninger started the department two years ago. Hess is a Lancaster County native and Penn Manor High School graduate.

4-H Camp Out Cancelled by Lancaster County Clubs
The three day Lancaster County 4 H camp planned for June 13 to 16 at Camp Chiquetan has been cancelled due to lack of interest, according to a spokesman for the county extension service.

Annual Cooperative Youth Tour Not Held This Summer
The County Council of farmer cooperatives will instead partner with the Pennsylvania Association of Farmer Cooperatives for a co op training conference for youth at Juniata College in Huntington in late summer. Crawford P Brantley of Southeastern Pennsylvania Artificial Breeders Cooperative chairs the effort and will cover registration fees for county farm youths to attend the three day event. Competition to attend the American Institute of Cooperation will be state based this year. Lancaster County will not send a representative.

Marjorie Jane Thurston named assistant home economist for Lancaster County. Dr. H R Albrecht of Penn State Extension announces she will begin June 19 to assist adult and 4H homemaking programs. Thurston, a Westmoreland County native, is Greensburg High School graduate with a bachelor of science in home economics.

David Lichty Receives American Agriculturalist Award
David Lichty of Paradise received the American Agriculturalist Foundation Award at Pequea Valley High School commencement. The senior in vocational agriculture earned the honor for top yearly achievement, along with a certificate and a book. He previously won the Keystone Farmer degree in Future Farmers of America and the DeKalb Award for agricultural excellence. Lichty is building a Holstein dairy herd with Penn State support.
