Mountville woman tests dairy herd milk in Lancaster County
Joan A. Snyder of Mountville works as a Dairy Herd Improvement Association tester in Lancaster County. She samples milk from 18 herds plus 9 owner sampler herds monthly, often commuting in winter to farms from Rawlinsville to Elizabeth town. Her work, largely centralized at Penn State, uses plastic bags and potassium dichromate to preserve samples, with testing now done at the university. Snyder balances farming passion with horse riding, shows, and community activities, and is active in the Half Arabian Association of Pennsylvania and local riding clubs.
